1. Executive Summary

Mercer-Wood Solutions proposes a scalable, environmentally sound, and socially inclusive initiative to restore and purify heavily polluted water bodies across Ghana. Phase 1 of the “Clean Water Ghana Initiative” will focus on major rivers and lagoons impacted by illegal mining, urban waste, and industrial discharge. The project aims to deliver both ecological restoration and long-term human health benefits using modern and traditional water purification techniques, backed by data-driven monitoring and community participation.

2. Background & Justification

Ghana’s water bodies are under serious threat due to rampant pollution. Illegal mining (galamsey), waste dumping, and poor regulatory enforcement have rendered rivers like the Pra, Ankobra, and lagoons like Korle unsafe and unsustainable. This not only affects ecosystems but also threatens water security, agriculture, fishing livelihoods, and public health.
