Spot Price

The current market price at which a precious metal can be bought or sold for immediate delivery, quoted in USD per troy ounce.

Troy Ounce (ozt)

The standard unit of weight for precious metals, equal to 31.1035 grams — slightly heavier than a standard avoirdupois ounce (28.35g).

LBMA Fix

The London Bullion Market Association’s twice-daily benchmark price for gold and silver, set at 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM London time.

Contango

A market condition where the futures price of a metal is higher than the current spot price, typically reflecting storage and financing costs.

Backwardation

When the spot price exceeds the futures price — often signals immediate supply tightness or strong near-term demand.

Crystalline Osmium

The only stable crystalline form of osmium, certified by the International Osmium Institute (IOI). Valued at approximately $55.70/g as of April 2026.

PGM (Platinum Group Metals)

A family of six metallic elements: platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, and osmium — all sharing similar physical and chemical properties.

Autocatalyst

A catalytic converter component that uses platinum, palladium, or rhodium to convert harmful vehicle exhaust gases into less harmful substances.

ESG

Environmental, Social, and Governance — a framework for evaluating a company’s ethical impact and sustainability practices alongside financial performance.

Net Zero

Achieving a balance between greenhouse gas emissions produced and those removed from the atmosphere — typically targeting 2050 as the deadline.

Scope 1, 2 & 3 Emissions

Scope 1: direct emissions. Scope 2: indirect from purchased energy. Scope 3: all other indirect emissions across the value chain — typically the largest category.

TCFD

Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures — a framework for companies to report climate-related risks and opportunities to investors.

Green Bond

A fixed-income instrument specifically earmarked to raise money for climate and environmental projects, verified against international standards.

Impact Investing

Investments made with the intention of generating measurable positive social or environmental impact alongside a financial return.

Letter of Intent (LOI)

A document outlining the preliminary agreement between a buyer and seller before a formal contract is executed — commonly used in large precious metals transactions.

SWIFT MT103

A standardised SWIFT message format used for international wire transfers — the standard payment method for large precious metals transactions.

KYC / AML

Know Your Customer / Anti-Money Laundering — regulatory compliance procedures required before executing large commodity or financial transactions.

Basis

The difference between the spot price and the futures price of a commodity — used to measure the cost of carry and market sentiment.

Spread

The difference between the bid price (what a buyer will pay) and the ask price (what a seller will accept) for a precious metal.

Allocated Storage

Physical precious metals held in a vault in the investor’s name — as opposed to unallocated storage, where the metal is pooled with other investors’ holdings.

Sustainable Finance

Financial services and products that integrate ESG criteria into investment decisions to support long-term sustainable economic growth.

Blended Finance

The strategic use of development finance and philanthropic funds to mobilise additional private capital toward sustainable development goals.

Carbon Credit

A tradeable certificate representing the right to emit one tonne of CO₂ — used by companies to offset emissions they cannot yet eliminate.

GRI Standards

Global Reporting Initiative — the world’s most widely used framework for sustainability reporting, covering economic, environmental, and social impacts.

Circular Economy

An economic model that eliminates waste by keeping resources in use for as long as possible through reuse, repair, remanufacturing, and recycling.

Transition Finance

Financing provided to carbon-intensive industries to support their transition to lower-emission business models — distinct from pure green finance.
